The Yosemite Valley Loop is a 30-mile loop through Yosemite National Park. The loop starts and ends from the Yosemite Valley and traverses clockwise featuring some of the park's main attractions. Along this route you pass by Tenaya Lake, climb up and over Clouds Rest, walk beneath stunning views of Half Dome, travel alongside the Merced River, pass through Little Yosemite Valley, and hike along a small section of the famous John Muir Trail (JMT). The route passes through beautiful alpine scenery including giant granite cliffs, lush meadows, and waterfalls. There is an overall elevation gain of 8,120 feet on this moderate to strenuous route. Prepare yourself for grand climbs and even grander views!

It is best to do this loop as an overnight backpacking trip. It intersects multiple trails, making it easy to shorten or extend the route according to your needs. The trails used along this route are open to trail running, hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding.

BACKCOUNTRY CAMPING

Yosemite National Park is one of the most popular national park’s attracting outdoor enthusiasts from all over the world. Therefore, permits are required year-round for overnight camping and it is best to look into reserving your permit well in advance.

WILDLIFE

Yosemite National Park, and the designated wilderness area, is home to a variety of animals including black bears, coyotes, Sierra bighorn sheep, mule deer, and several species of birds.

FOOD STORAGE

Black bears have become a significant problem in the area as they have become more and more comfortable around humans and are venturing into areas where they are not welcome. The Yosemite Wilderness requires you to store food and other scented items in bear-proof containers to protect yourself and the bears. In Yosemite, hanging food is not permitted.
