Arrastre Creek Road Loop is a 25.8-mile loop that starts and ends on Forest Road 2N02 (Arrastre Creek Road) in the San Bernardino National Forest. Heading north on Arrastre Road, the route connects to the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and heads south, passing Round Valley Campground before completing the loop back via Arrastre Road. The trail offers a mix of scenic forested areas, mountain views, open meadows and peaceful solitude.

Trail Description:
The adventure begins at the parking area along Forest Road 2N02 (Arrastre Road). From here, head north along the road, gradually climbing toward higher elevations as you traverse the southwest side of the Bighorn Mountain Wilderness. As you ascend, the views of the surrounding valleys and mountains open up, revealing a beautiful and rugged landscape.

After about 9.5 miles, Forest Road 2N02 intersects with the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Take the PCT south. This section of the trail is well-maintained, winding through pine forests and offering occasional vistas of the valley below. After a total of 16.1 miles, turn onto Forest Road 2N01, heading back toward the Bighorn Mountain Wilderness. This road will eventually reconnect with Forest Road 2N02 (Arrastre Road). From here, retrace your steps back to the trailhead.

Flora and Fauna:
Along the route, you'll encounter a variety of vegetation, ranging from scrubby chaparral at the lower elevations to taller pine forests as you climb. In spring and early summer, wildflowers can be found in the open areas.

Wildlife sightings are common, with potential encounters including mule deer, coyotes, squirrels, and various species of birds such as hawks and woodpeckers. You may also come across smaller creatures like lizards and rabbits. Be cautious of rattlesnakes, particularly during warmer months.

Considerations:

  • Weather: Be prepared for varying temperatures throughout the day. It can be warm at the start of the hike, but cooler conditions are typical as you gain elevation. In the evening, temperatures may drop quickly.

  • Water: There are no reliable water sources along the trail, so be sure to carry enough water to last the entire hike.

  • Navigation: The trail is generally straightforward, but a map or GPS is useful for navigation.

  • Wildlife: As with any wilderness area, take precautions with wildlife. Be sure to stay at a safe distance from any animals, and avoid leaving food unattended.

  • Parking: Parking is available along Forest Road 2N02 (Arrastre Road) near the trailhead. An Adventure Pass is required for parking in the San Bernardino National Forest, so be sure to have one displayed in your vehicle.

Best Time to Hike:
Spring through fall offers the best conditions for this hike, with mild weather and snow-free trails. In summer, early starts are recommended to avoid the afternoon heat, while spring and fall provide cooler, more comfortable temperatures for hiking.
