Port des Morts Park is a small park located in the town of Liberty Grove, Wisconsin on the tip of the Door Peninsula. The park is between Gills Rock and Northport, at the end of Kenosha Drive. Port des Morts Town Park is named for its view of Death's Door which is the French translation of Port des Morts. The strait that separates the Door Peninsula and Washington island is known for its treacherous waters that claimed many boats and ships over the years.
The park sits atop a limestone bluff that is part of the Niagara Escarpment. The Niagara Escarpment runs from the state of New York, through Ontario, Canada and onto Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. The escarpment is the cliff over which the waters of the Niagara River plunge to form Niagara Falls.
The park has 200 feet of rocky shoreline below the cliff. In the summer of 2018, a new staircase was completed giving visitors easy access to the shore. The cliff here is home to many plant and animal species including the northern white cedar whose roots grow in cracks of the cliff.
The park has a picnic table, two benches, and a grill. There are informational signs in the park. Dogs on a leash are allowed in the park. There are no fees to access this park. Since this park is quite small, parking is limited.
