OVERVIEW
This 19.3-mile loop starts from a trailhead near Silverwood Lake Recreation Area. The route heads north on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and loops around via Cleghorn Ridge Road, with an option to summit Cleghorn Peak before retracing your steps back to the trailhead. Offering a mix of forested terrain, ridgelines, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, this loop is a great adventure for backpackers, experienced hikers, and ambitious trail runners.
DESCRIPTION
Start your hike heading north on the PCT. This section is relatively straightforward, with moderate elevation gain and scenic views of the surrounding landscape. Depending on the time of year, you'll pass wildflowers, oak woodlands, and rocky outcrops.
At the junction, turn onto Cleghorn Ridge Road, a well-maintained fire road. This section provides open views as you continue along the ridge. Midway through, you'll have the option to summit Cleghorn Peak. The summit offers panoramic views of the San Bernardino Mountains and valleys. Note that the route to the summit is unmaintained, so be prepared to navigate around sharp buckthorn and other obstacles.
Continue to descend back down Cleghorn Ridge Road until you reach the junction with the PCT. Take the PCT south to return to the trailhead where you began.
Recommended for: Experienced hikers and backpackers, particularly those looking for a challenging loop with rewarding views and a bit of a climb.
