Lying 1.7 miles downriver from the Minam Store and recreation site along Highway 82, the Minam Campground is a jewel of a campground and swimming area nestled far from the crowds in this scenic area.
The campground, a part of the larger Minam State Recreation Area, lies along a bend of the Wallowa River which is popular for swimming, rafting, fishing, as well as being a scenic spur of the Wallowa Union Railroad passenger train ride. Minam is the starting point of a multi-day float to the town of Troy, however those just wanting an easy afternoon float can put in at the Minam Store and float that 1.7 miles to the campground where they can climb out and shuttle right back out. Raft rentals are available at the store.
The Minam Campground has 22 basic sites, set scenically beneath a grove of trees and surrounded by forested mountain slopes. Its remoteness tends to keep the campground free of large crowds, though locals then to stop here to fish or walk their dogs. Sites have tables and fire pits. And while a few have parking large enough for RVs, there is water but no power hookups here.
Reaching the campground requires a 1.7 drive down a rolling gravel road that can be wet and muddy, but generally stays passable to most vehicle types.
Features of the campground are the horseshoe pits, an apple tree in the middle of camp, and easy access to the water where you can wade out and cool off during the hot season.
A vault toilet services the campground, and there are water spigots set throughout the camp.
The campground operates strictly on a first come, first serve basis, with no reservations. While the area is open for day use year round, camping is only open from May 1st-October 31st.
