Established in 1970, the Field Art Gallery is a small, quaint gallery in West Tisbury in Martha’s Vineyard. With many fascinating sculptures and paintings to look at and an open field to relax in, the Field Gallery is a great place to visit.
Originally constructed by friends, strangers and island visitors, the Field Gallery was a volunteer-built gallery used as a place for local artists to display their work. It is currently run by a small staff and continues to represent more than 25 talented artists all with distinct connections to Martha’s Vineyard. You can submit your own work for display by following the submission guidelines located on their website.
As you enter onto the property of the Field Gallery, you will walk onto a beautifully-landscaped open field filled with unique sculptures. These sculptures are spread across the field around the gallery’s main building. There are a few benches and tables available in the field to sit and enjoy a picnic while admiring the surrounding art. There are also beautiful paintings and other smaller sculptures inside the building, all of which are available for purchase.
The gallery is free and open to the public daily during the summer months. During fall and spring months, it is still open for visitors; however, with their reduced hours, be sure to double check their schedule before arriving. Since the gallery does not have its own parking lot, parking can be tough. Some street parking is available right in front of the gallery.
While walking around West Tisbury in Martha’s Vineyard, the Field Art Gallery should definitely be visited. With its free admission and unique space, it is a lovely way to enjoy a summer afternoon.
