MacKenzie State Recreation Area lies along the Big Island's Puna coast. The area has the feel of a quiet neighborhood park, with just a handful of parking spots in this quiet area of the island.

Ironwood trees create a canopy above the picnic area, volcanic tables and seats, memorial monument and vault bathrooms that make up the park. At the park's edge, cliffs give way to dramatic drops into the volcanic rock below where high tide will put on a show sending waves and spray high over the clifftops.

Standing across 13 acres, the shady park area makes a good spot to throw out a hammock for an afternoon, or to lay out some food in the covered picnic pavilion.

All in all, the park can feel a bit neglected. But if you're looking for a quiet corner to spend the afternoon, this is the place. MacKenzie State Recreation Area is open from 7am to 7pm daily. There is no water here and no entrance fee.
