Kekaha Beach Park lies along Kauai's southwestern shore. It's geography gives the area features that give the beach park a different feel from most others on the island.
Kekeha composes a portion of the island's largest stretch of white sand beach. And lying distant from the more heavily touristed areas of the island, it's often possible to come to Kekeha and go for a walk in the sand without encountering another person. The wide sand beach, particularly near the parking and amenities at MacArthur Park, makes for a popular area for locals to throw out chairs and umbrellas and sit above the crashing waves.
Having no protection from a reef, however, also makes the beach prone to strong rip currents, making for less than ideal, and often dangerous swimming conditions. Unless waters are very calm, this beach is probably best enjoyed from its shores. Fishermen can often be seen pole fishing from the rocky shoreline adjacent to Kaumualii Highway, and there are plenty of road pull outs to watch the picturesque skies from just above the water.
Kauai's southwestern area often remains sunny when other areas of the island are getting rain, making Kekaha Beach Park and its surroundings a possibly desireable alternative during seasons of more uncertain weather conditions.
Adjacent MacArthur Park is a small park area with covered picnic tables, a lawn area, showers, water and a lifeguard tower staffed daily during the tourist season. Driving on the beach is permitted, but should not be attempted by those unfamiliar with driving on Kauai's western beaches.
