The Mescal Loop Trail is popular with both hikers and mountain bikers and loops around 5,043’ Mescal Mountain. Beginner mountain bikers may find the slickrock section of this trail challenging, therefore it is only recommended for more experienced riders.

The trail starts from the Mescal Trailhead off Long Canyon Road. Begin by following the Mescal Trail as it climbs slightly toward Mescal Mountain in the near distance.

As you reach the mountain, the slickrock portion of trail begins. For hikers this stretch of trail proves no challenge, but bikers should use caution here. There are two different routes here, one “difficult” and one “extreme.” Both rejoin further down the trail.

The trail then continues around Mescal Mountain until it joins up with the Deadman’s Pass Trail. This easy and somewhat sandy trail leads to the northeast and eventually connects with the Long Canyon Trail.

Next you’ll take a right on the Long Canyon Trail. Continue along the well traveled path, past the unmarked turnoff to the Birthing Cave, until you once again near Long Canyon Road. Just before the road is the Mescal Connector Trail. Take a right and follow this path back to the trailhead.
