The Long Canyon Trail is one of the best trails in Sedona for hikers looking to escape the crowds. While the hike doesn’t offer as many stunning red rock views as other trails in the area, it is still an enjoyable and beautiful trek. The only downside is that the trail seems to be directly underneath a route used by the area’s helicopter tours, a bit of an annoyance at times.

Begin by finding parking along Long Canyon Road. The Long Canyon Trail then begins to head toward the valley. The first stretch of the hike is the most crowded, and the trail is quite wide and flat. After passing the Birthing Cave and Dead Man’s Pass junctions the crowds will begin to thin.

You’ll catch a glimpse of Seven Canyons Golf Club on your right before entering into the Red Rock - Secret Mountain Wilderness. The trail then passes through mostly forested terrain and crosses a dry wash several times. A few glimpses of some impressive red rock formations to the right of the trail are also to be had.

The trail begins to steadily gain elevation as it heads further up the canyon. The forest becomes denser and the trail begins to become a bit overgrown in areas. The end of the trail offers no views, so I’d recommend turning around whenever you feel like it.

If you do decide to hike to the trail’s end you might be able to spot some Native American ruins and petroglyphs. In addition, for those feeling adventurous, a trip off trail and up the side of the canyon offers spectacular views. Otherwise, return the way you came back to the trailhead.
