Lake Bruin State Park is home to the beautiful 3,000-acre Lake Bruin, which has some of the clearest water in Louisiana. This state park does an excellent job catering to visitors who have come to get on the water and explore the lake. There are two different docks, a boat shed, and a boat ramp that make getting on and off of the water a breeze. If you’re camping at the state park campground with the intention of getting on the water with a canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard, try to camp at campsite 5, 6, 7, 13, 15, or 16 and you’ll be able to access the water directly from your campsite. Boats with motors will need to use the boat ramp found just at the edge of the campground.
The Paddle Trail at Lake Bruin begins by heading south of the boat ramp. Staying close to shore keeps you near the iconic cypress trees and away from the wakes of motorized boats. For a little over a mile you’ll follow the shoreline south until you reach the end of the lake. You’ll know when you’ve reached the southern tip of the lake because the southern shoreline is developed with residential neighborhoods. Follow the eastern shoreline back up the lake to where you began. Be cautious if you’re in a stand-up paddleboard or kayak as alligators and large cottonmouth snakes call this lake their home.
Beyond paddling on the lake there is much to enjoy at Lake Bruin State Park. The lake is a popular spot for largemouth bass fishing if you prefer to just stay on the water after paddling. The water playground is a fun way for the kids to cool off in the hotter months. Adults can kick back at one of the picnic tables and enjoy some food cooked on the grill.
