Shortcut to Vetter + Mooney is a 12.3 mile route in Angeles National Forest that takes hikers to Vetter Mountain and Mount Mooney, two peaks on the Sierra Club’s Hundred Peaks list.

This moderately challenging route offers panoramic mountain views, shaded forest trails, and sections with rugged terrain. The trail’s variety of terrain and some steep sections make it most appropriate for intermediate-level hikers or anyone comfortable with uneven and rocky trails.

ROUTE DESCRIPTION

Begin at the Shortcut Pass Trailhead, following the Silver Moccasin Trail through shaded forested areas. Continue along this trail until you reach the junction with the Vetter Mountain Trail. Take this spur trail up to the summit of Vetter Mountain, where panoramic views of the San Gabriel Mountains and surrounding valleys await you at the fire lookout—an ideal spot to pause and enjoy the scenery.

From Vetter Mountain, descend and head towards the Mount Mooney Truck Trail. Follow the short spur from the truck trail to reach the summit of Mount Mooney, where you’ll find expansive views and a quiet, scenic spot to appreciate the rugged beauty of Angeles National Forest.

After taking in the views from Mount Mooney, retrace your steps to reconnect with the Silver Moccasin Trail, following it back to the Shortcut Pass Trailhead to complete the loop.

Flora and Fauna

This route passes through a mix of pine and oak forests with chaparral-covered slopes. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including mule deer, hawks, and small mammals, especially during early morning or late afternoon.

Safety and Considerations

  • Water: Bring sufficient water, as there are no reliable water sources along this route.

  • Sun Exposure: Many sections of the trail are exposed, so wear sun protection.

  • Weather: The Angeles National Forest can experience significant temperature fluctuations, so check the weather forecast and prepare accordingly.

  • Navigation: The trails are generally well-marked, but a map or GPS is recommended to stay on course, especially around trail junctions.
