The Druid Stones is a scenic lollipop loop that takes hikers up into the hills offering stunning views of the Sierra Nevada, the Bishop Valley and across to the White Mountains. The trail also passes by some impressive, large boulders - some of which are popular with climbers. The only caveat to this hike is the nearly 2,000 feet of elevation gain required.
Begin by finding a parking spot alongside Bir Road, then follow a dirt 4x4 road (closed to vehicles) until the actual singletrack trail begins.
Once on trail you’ll begin the steep, unrelenting climb. Continue up the hillside until the grade finally lets up a bit.
You’ll then come to a junction. This is the start of the loop portion of the hike. If you take a right you’ll pass by some large, impressive boulders. Continue onward as the trail climbs, but not quite as steeply as before.
The trail eventually comes to another junction where you’ll turn left. A steep descent follows. You’ll then pass a popular bouldering area just to the right of the trail. It’s well worth the detour to check out.
The trail then rejoins the initial tread as the lollipop loop portion ends. Follow this familiar trail back down the hill, and enjoy the descent until you again reach Bir Road and the end of the hike.
