The Nankoweap Granaries are an amazing sight. From the Colorado River below you can just make out what appears to be a row of windows carved into the sandstone on a seemingly unclimbable ledge way above.

The windows are actually small storage units, used by ancestral Puebloans to store their grain, keeping it safe and dry. They were built around 1100 AD.

The granaries are a truly incredible sight, but to access them you’ll need to embark on quite the journey. The easiest way to visit the ruins is by securing a spot on a rafting trip through the Grand Canyon. Alternatively, you can hike the very difficult Nankoweap Trail from the North Rim down to the granaries.

To get from the Colorado River up to the granaries you’ll follow a well trodden but steep trail. This leads right to the ruins. Please enjoy but don’t touch or enter the granaries.
