Hot Springs National Park, established in 1921, is the first national park designated for its thermal springs, attracting visitors since the 1800s. The Mountain Tower, built in 1926, offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, allowing guests to appreciate the area's natural beauty and historical significance.
The Mountain Peak Trail is a moderate hike that connects the Bathhouses to the Mountain Tower in Hot Springs National Park. The trail begins between the fountains next to the Fordyce Bathhouse. Hikers will follow the path to the steps and walk up to the promenade, where they should take a moment to check out the display springs that showcase the natural hot spring.
From there, hikers will follow the Tula Terrace path for a short distance before reaching the Peak Trail. Once on the Mountain Peak Trail, they will start their ascent up the mountain for roughly half a mile. The trail features both paved portions and stairs but is mostly gravel. Several trails and roads intersect with the path, so hikers should pay attention to the signs directing them to the peak.
At the end of the trail, hikers will find a white shelter that offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains. From this vantage point, they can choose to ascend the Mountain Tower. Admission to the tower is $14.00, granting access to 360-degree views of the area, including downtown Hot Springs. The tower features one indoor floor that provides visitors with historical information about the region, as well as an open-air observation deck. Hikers have the option to use either the elevator or the stairs.
Once they’ve finished enjoying the lookout or the tower, hikers will return the same way they came back to Bathhouse Row. This is a great short, but challenging hike for people to enjoy a slice of nature within Hot Springs National Park.
