George Washington's Mount Vernon

Step back in time and explore George Washington's Mount Vernon along the Potomac River. Being the first president of the United States, George Washington contributed a lot to the country, and his estate gives visitors a chance to experience a little bit of what his life was like.

Starting out as a plantation with a small farmhouse, the estate grew over the years and is now one of the most visited historic sites in the country. The grounds contain many trails to explore through the four gardens, the pioneer farm, and the forest. Historic buildings are scattered throughout the grounds. Most are open to visitors and have interpreters in period costumes to help you experience the site as it once was. The Forest Trail is about a quarter mile long and winds through the forest with interpretive signs telling of the history and importance of the site.

The museum and education center include exhibits and programs about the estate and the many people who were connected to it. The museum collections contain many historic and interesting objects, including Washington’s dentures, which were made of human, horse and cow teeth (not wood).
