Water Canyon is an oasis in an otherwise dry and dusty desert. Located just a few miles from Winemucca, it offers convenient access to trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Sunshades and clusters of cottonwood trees provide shade on even the hottest of summer days. With several primitive campsites spaced out along Water Canyon's main road, there are opportunities for individuals and small groups to experience a quick and quiet getaway in one of Nevada's beautiful wild places.

The best time to visit Water Canyon is between spring and fall, when the roads are dry and clear of snow. The dirt roads can be difficult or impossible to drive on when wet, and all roads leading from the main road are four-wheel drive only. Roads and trails in the lower part of the canyon, however, are easily accessed by basic passenger cars.

While visiting the canyon, keep your eyes and ears open for wildlife. Watch for California quail scurrying from shrub to shrub. Listen for the drumming of woodpeckers hunting for bugs in the cottonwood trees. And be alert for mule deer crossing the road around dusk. The desert is surprisingly vibrant with hardy plants and animals. Travel slowly and quietly for your best chance at glimpsing more secretive creatures like rattlesnakes, lizards and badgers.
