Moku Ola Beach Park - also called Coconut Island - is a unique beach park near the center of Hilo's resort area.
To reach the park, visitors must cross a bridge onto the island at the edge of Hilo Bay. Once on the island, visitors have their choice of heading toward the large grassy lawn area, any of the covered picnic pavilions, or the numerous small bays and swimming areas.
The generally calm waters around the island make the area popular for swimming and snorkeling, though the water tends to be a little murky. Views extend across Hilo Bay to the town's waterfront, however turning the other direction you'll be looking right at the resort buildings.
Locals will fill wagons and pull them over the bridge to bring all their stuff for an afternoon. There are two small white sand beaches, but the park also remains popular with local kids as there is a stone jumping platform with 10' and 20' ledges perched over the water.
Bathrooms and water are located on the island, though there are no lifeguards in this park.
The parking area is small and fills up very early on weekends. If full, there is additional parking the one-way Lihiwai Street alongside Liliuokalani Gardens, with walking paths leading back to the island park.
Moku Ola Beach Park is open from 7am to sunset daily.
