Keaukaha Beach Park along the coast just northwest of Hilo tends to have a more undeveloped feel to it than other area beach parks. For this reason, you won't find the crowds here.
The shoreline is rockier, making is less than ideal for any type of swimming or snorkeling. However the numerous small coves carved out into the coastline by cool natural springs makes Keaukaha a good spot if you're just looking for a more private spot to relax and dip your feet.
Amenities here are minimal - there are a few picnic benches spread throughout the park area, however none are covered. There are a couple showers but no drinking water. And that's about it as far as features inside the park go. However the rocky coastline has a wilder feel to it, and the tide pools just beyond the edge of the lawn are frequented by feeding Green sea turtles. There are several large shade trees and palms throughout the lawn to provide shade if you bring a blanket to throw out.
A few cement platforms sit alongside the spring pools, from which you can see the springs flowing into the cove.
The park also sits in the vicinity of Hilo, and from the water's edge you can take in views of the town with the slopes of Mauna Kea in the background.
Keaukaha Beach Park has a few parking spots inside the park, however there is an abundance of onstreet parking alongside the park. Keaukaha is open daily from 7am until sunset.
