The Commemorative Overland Emigrant Trail in Truckee makes for a great intro to snowshoeing where it follows Alder Creek. As the Alder Creek Road is right on the other side of the creek, it also has many bail-out points which makes it a great place for introducing kids to snowshoes.

Start at a small trailhead opposite Carpenter Valley Road, on the inner side of the curve. If you plan to park at the trailhead, make sure you’ll be able to drive your car back up the short hill through the snow.

Head out on the trail and follow it past the footbridge, then turn left. Simply follow the trail and the creek by going straight through any trail junctions; the trail will remain comparatively flat. The creek and the snowy surroundings make this a beautiful adventure even though it’s still very close to town and easily accessible.

After a mile and a half, you’ll arrive at a road, Schussing Way. Simply cross it; the trail continues on the other side. Follow the trail for another mile or so until you reach a small access point from Alder Creek Road. This is a good way to turn around and return. The way back will be slightly uphill, however, it’s not too noticeable.

Simply retrace your steps through the snow to get back to the trailhead. When you see a bridge on your right, cross it; the trailhead is only a quarter of a mile away then.
