Located at the high point of the Aruba landscape near the island's northwestern point is California Lighthouse.
Named for the S.S. California, a wooden ship that sank off of the island's waters in 1891 as there was no lighthouse at the time, California Lighthouse offers visitors a chance to climb a narrow spiral staircase to panoramic views over the northern half of the island. Originally constructed between the years of 1914-1916, and then completely renovated in 2016, the historic landmark is a popular place for visitors to drive to, making a natural turnaround point when exploring the island's northern stretches.
A restaurant and food trucks can be found in the parking area at the base of the lighthouse. The landmark gets particularly busy at sunset, though views from this hill are most scenic at that time of day.
California Lighthouse is open daily from 9am to 7pm. There is an admission fee of $5 per person to climb to the top. Visitors should expect a couple hundred steps on the tight circular stairway, which can feel especially confining when others are climbing and descending the steps at the same time.
Trash is available at the parking area. Bathrooms are located in the restaurant, however the restaurant will charge a small fee for non-customers to use them.
