Whitefish Dunes State Park is one of five state parks in Door County. It is an 867-acre park day-use park that was established in 1967 and is located on the shores of Lake Michigan about 14 miles northeast of the city of Sturgeon Bay. The park features forests, a half-mile beach on Lake Michigan, and the highest and most significant Great Lakes Dunes escape in Wisconsin. Recreational activities enjoyed by visitors include picnicking, swimming, hiking, off-road bicycling, cross-country skiing, and fishing.
The sandy beach on Lake Michigan makes Whitefish Dunes State Park a popular spot for swimming. The half mile long beach can be accessed from three locations. Dogs are allowed on the beach to southwest of the third beach access. There are no lifeguards at the beach. Be aware that Lake Michigan can produce dangerous rip currents. The first beach access is accessible and a beach wheelchair is available for use.
Canoeing and kayaking can be enjoyed at the park, but there is no boat launch here. Be aware of the wind conditions before venturing out on Lake Michigan.
Anglers may fish on Clark Lake. One must hike the Clark Lake Spur Trail to get to the lake. Wisconsin state fishing license rules apply. Fishing equipment is available for use at no charge at the park office.
There are 14.5 miles of hiking trails at Whitefish Dunes State Park. A portion of these trails are available for off-road biking. Stay on the park's designated trails and please do not climb on the dunes to protect the rare plant and animal species that call Whitefish Dunes home.
In the winter some trails are groomed for cross-country skiing. Snowshoeing is allowed on some trails as well.
The park is open year-round. A fee is required to enter the park. A Wisconsin state park day use or annual permit can be purchased at the Park Office. Dogs are allowed in all areas of the park, except for in the northeast portion of the beach, buildings, and picnic areas. Dogs must when kept on a leash 8 feet long or shorter.
