ROUTE DESCRIPTION

Start at the Rubio Canyon Trailhead, located just off Rubio Vista Road in Altadena, CA. The hike begins by descending into Rubio Canyon, crossing the creek, and immediately climbing back up. From here, follow the Lone Tree Trail, which gradually ascends toward Muir Peak. After reaching Muir Peak, continue along the dirt road path toward Inspiration Point, where you'll be rewarded with expansive views of the city and, on clear days, the ocean and Catalina Island.

From Inspiration Point, take the Mount Lowe East Side Trail to the summit of Mount Lowe. Along the way, enjoy panoramic vistas, with views of the rugged peaks to the east and the city and ocean to the west. From the top of Mount Lowe, briefly retrace your steps and then descend via the Mount Lowe West Side Trail.

You’ll once again visit the historic Inspiration Point. From there, take the Castle Canyon Trail, which is a steep path that winds down toward Echo Mountain. From Echo Mountain look for the Old Echo Mountain Trail which will reconnect to Rubio Canyon. This section is less maintained and very steep. Be sure to have a map and stay on the obvious footpaths, as this section can be tricky to navigate. Follow the Rubio Canyon Trail back to the trailhead to complete the loop.
