Hayden Cabin

Hayden Cabin is located in Mammoth Lakes, just a short walk from several of the shops and restaurants downtown. The historic cabin is of course the highlight, but the surrounding area is quite lovely with mountain views and Mammoth Creek running beside the property. The interior of the cabin is home to the Mammoth Museum, open during the summer months to visitors (no entry fee, donations appreciated). In addition, events such as live music are occasionally held at the cabin, and the grounds can be reserved for private events such as weddings.

The cabin was constructed in the 1920s and 30s by a map maker named Emmett Hayden. Hayden built the cabin by hand from local logs and granite, a task that took 10 summers. When completed it was used as a hunting and fishing lodge. Many of the hunters and fishermen that stayed here used Emmett Hayden as their guide.

Today visitors will find the well preserved cabin, of which the interior can be explored (during summer months) which houses the museum with collections of furnishings, photos and artifacts. Even if the museum is closed, Hayden Cabin is a worthwhile visit. Old cars and machinery lay strewn in the front yard, while the back yard is a lovely area that features picnic tables and Mammoth Creek. A bridge across the creek also connects Hayden Cabin with the paved 7.8 mile Town Loop pathway.
