Parts of Central America can be hot, humid and downright unbearable at times. The Cayo District in western Belize is no exception. One way to beat the heat is to find a good swimming hole. Located just a few miles from the Guatemalan border along the Mopan River is Clarissa Falls, with a great spot to take a dip.

The Mopan River starts in Guatemala and eventually combines with the Macal River in Belize. Popular water activities include swimming, floating, kayaking and canoeing. The river is mellow with small rapids at Clarissa Falls, but during the rainy season there can be flooding and high water. The Mopan River is an important source of drinking water as well as other domestic use for local people in the region.

The area is also good for bird watching. The onsite restaurant is full-service, reasonably priced and has a variety of local Belizean meals. They have vegetarian and vegan options. Restroom facilities are available, but no showers. There is a small day-use fee.
