Mayan Ruins at Tulum

If you are vacationing in the Riviera Maya region of Mexico, a visit to the Mayan Ruins at Tulum is highly recommended. The ruins are located about 40 miles south of Playa del Carmen off Highway 307.

The walled city ruins are well preserved with about 60 structures at the site. The site was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The highlight of the ruins is a large stone structure known as El Castillo (the castle). It is located on a rocky cliff above a white sand beach and the beautiful turquoise Caribbean Sea.

Tulum ruins can be reached by taking a tour or by arranging your own transportation (taxi, bus, or car) to Tulum. From Highway 307 in Tulum, is it about a half-mile walk to the ruins. Instead of walking, tourists can be transported to the ruins site using a tractor-pulled train for a small fee. There is an entrance fee to tour the site. The ruins are open every day of the week from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
