Lying 8.9 miles from the town of Kernville, Spring Hill South Campground is a primitive dispersed campground maintained by the Forest Service.
A sandy dirt road loops through an area lying between the highway and the Kern River, where campers can set up anywhere provided they remain at least 25 feet from the water's edge. Over time, some use sites have developed, however these are the only markings of camp spots. There are no tables, no numbers, no labeled parking spots or anything. There is also no water. However the Forest Service provides outhouses and trash cans during the summer months.
The campground operates strictly on a first come, first served basis, with a couple areas sizable enough for groups to camp at.
A few flat walking paths lead directly to the river, where summer months bring plenty of line casters and rafters on the water.
With a large number of campgrounds set along this section of the river, Spring Hill South Campground's primary attraction is that the dispersed sites may allow campers to find a bit more privacy than some of the more popular area campgrounds.
