Long John Canyon to Cerro Gordo is a 39-mile out-and-back route through the Inyo Mountains and the Inyo Mountain Wilderness. It follows lightly trafficked dirt road trails through remote canyons and across scenic ridgelines featuring a stop at Cerro Gordo Ghost Town, an old mining town within the Inyo Mountains just outside of Lone Pine, CA. This is a great trek for those seeking a pristine wilderness adventure with scenic vistas, historical significance, and plenty of solitude.

This is a challenging route with extreme changes in elevation ranging from 3,300 feet up to 9,300 feet above sea level. Because the terrain is rugged and remote with some unmaintained sections, it is recommended that visits check with local land managers for current conditions before heading out.

This route starts at the base of Long John Canyon and travels uphill through the canyon. After about 7.6 miles, turn right on the dirt road path near Burgess Mine. For approximately 6 more miles, you will travel across rolling terrain. At the next dirt road junction, turn right and follow the dirt path to Cerro Gordo Ghost Town.

Cerro Gordo Ghost Town is the turn-around point, but once you reach it, take a moment to enjoy the views looking west across Owens Valley at the stunning jagged peaks of the Sierra Nevada.

CONSIDERATIONS / CHALLENGES

During this route, you will cross rugged terrain and remote areas. Prepare for a challenging hike without much shade or water. Check the weather before heading out, as temperatures can vary depending on elevation and time of year. Be prepared with adequate clothing and water, and you'll enjoy a beautiful and diverse mountainous desert.
