Blackwoods Campround

The Blackwoods Campground is the most popular campground in Acadia National Park. With 306 campsites, several bathrooms, multiple group camping areas, and unbeatable proximity to the marquee adventures in Acadia, it’s easy to see why. Be prepared to book your site early, especially during peak season.

Located near the southeast corner of Mount Desert Island, Blackwoods Campground provides direct access to the Cadillac Mountain South Ridge Trail, and it is only a 10-minute walk to the ocean. Its proximity to the many entrances of the Park Loop Road expand the recreational capacity of the campground.

Because of the massive demand for camping in the region, much of the campground feels congested. The sites are relatively small and close together, but they do have good access to restrooms, potable water, and trash receptacles. There are no showers within the campground, but a fee-use facility can be found a short distance up Route 3. Park rangers frequently host informational programming at the amphitheater and beyond, and the Island Explorer Shuttle bus makes frequent stops near the campground entrance, allowing visitors to park their car at their site and leave it there for the duration of their visit.

Campsites are gravel and limited to two tents, six individuals, and one vehicle. None feature electric or water hookups. RVs are limited to 35 feet in length and 11 feet 8 inches in height. From May 1 to October 31 sites are $20 per night, dropping to $10 for April and November. The additional park entry fee is also required. Reservations are recommended. The rest of the year, primitive camping is allowed by permit, and campers are required to hike in from the entrance.

Densely forested with access to the most popular parts of Acadia National Park, the Blackwoods Campground trades seclusion for proximity to key adventures. The drinking water and restrooms are clean, and many of the sites are level. It’s an ideal campground for those looking to stay in the heart of Acadia National Park.
