The Pa Lookout Walk is a short hike located in Coromandel. This hike treks through lush forest up to a pa. A pa is a Maori fortified hilltop settlement. The trail is dirt or gravel the whole way. This out and back hike is 1 mile long and gains 180 feet of elevation.
This hike starts from Wharf Rd. There is a parking lot with a bathroom across the road. Begin hiking north between houses. After 0.1 miles, you will come to a station to clean the dirt off of your boots to prevent kauri dieback. Almost immediately after this, you will see a young kauri tree that was planted here.
You will now be hiking uphill through dense forest. From time to time, you will have views of the town of Coromandel and the Coromandel Range. Continue trekking uphill. After 0.3 miles, you will come to a junction. Go right here to continue toward the pa. After you have hiked uphill for another 0.1 miles, you will have reached the Pa Lookout.
The top does not have much vegetation, so there are great views. You will be able to see the Coromandel Range and the town of Coromandel to the east. To the west, Mcgregor Bay and Wyuna Bay are visible. Take ample time to enjoy the views and rest up before retracing your steps down the hill to return to the trailhead.
The Pa Lookout Walk is open for hiking year round. There are no associated fees to hike here. Dogs are allowed on this trail, but they must be on a leash at all times. There is a mountain biking trail that intersects this trail, so be on the lookout for bikers. The Pa Lookout Walk is a nice and easy opportunity to enjoy beautiful views in the heart of Coromandel.
