River Loop Trail

The River Loop Trail is located along the Skagit River in Newhalem, WA. The hike begins from the North Cascades Visitor Center and spends most of it’s time meandering through the beautiful forest before paralleling the river for a short stretch.

To begin, walk behind the visitor center and find the (signed) start of the trail. An informative sign also tells of the ecology and history of this area.

The River Loop then descends gently into the dense forest. Continue as the trail passes near the large Newhalem Creek Campground which can be accessed by a side trail.

You’ll then come to the Skagit River. This powerful river originates from the snowfields and glaciers of the North Cascades high above, and the water has a greenish tint thanks to glacier sediment.

The trail then leaves the river and curves along the edge of an old burn area. This provides an opening and some enjoyable views through the otherwise dense forest.

The trail eventually curves back around on itself to complete the loop portion of the hike. Turn right and walk the familiar path back up to the Visitor Center to conclude your hike.
