Peggy’s Pond is a beautiful backcountry lake located deep within the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. It is flanked on one side by the impressive Cathedral Rock, and on the other by the rising eastern slopes of 7,963’ Mount Daniel. It makes for a popular base camp for anyone looking to summit Mount Daniel, but the lake in itself is a worthwhile destination.
You’ll begin the 10 mile out and back trek from Cathedral Pass Trailhead, located at the end of the long gravel Cle Elum Valley Road. Follow Cathedral Pass Trail (#1345) as it crosses the Cle Elum River then ascends through the forest.
The first highlight is Nosh Nosh Wahtum, a scenic small lake. A ways further up the trail you’ll pass a few small ponds and have your first stunning views of Cathedral Rock which looms large in the distance.
Continue until reaching the junction with the Pacific Crest Trail at Cathedral Pass. Turn left and follow the PCT for a short distance until you come to another junction. This is the trail to Peggy’s Pond. It is signed as a hiker trail, and is indeed a bit rugged and not suitable for horses.
Follow the hiker trail as it traverses underneath Cathedral Rock, with great views down to Deep Lake below. A short but steep final climb leads to Peggy’s Pond.
There are many campsites scattered around the pond, making it a perfect spot to enjoy the night. Although the pond is well off the beaten path, you likely won’t have it to yourself as it is also a popular basecamp for climbers looking to summit Mount Daniel in the morning.
After enjoying your time at the pond, return the way you came.
