The hike to Cascade Pass is the most popular day hike in North Cascades National Park, and for good reason. The views are simply stunning - even from the parking lot at the trailhead. No permits are required (unless you are overnighting) and no entrance fee or parking fee is necessary. Perhaps the only deterrent is the long, narrow and occasionally bumpy drive in.
After the 23 mile drive in from Marblemount, the hike begins. The trail begins climbing almost immediately. The switchbacks seem endless, but the grade is gentle making the climb as easy as possible.
The switchbacks finally end after gaining about 1,500’ of elevation. The trail then contours with stunning views as you approach Cascade Pass.
You’ll soon reach the pass itself, where there is a great spot to sit and enjoy the view. There is also a toilet nearby.
While the pass is certainly a worthwhile destination, it’s possible to continue onward and upward to Sahale Arm for even more stunning views.
Otherwise, return the way you came back down the switchbacks and to the trailhead.
