Fremont Gorge Overlook Trail

The Fremont Gorge Overlook Trail is a moderately difficult hike located in Capitol Reef National Park. This out-and-back trail leads to a panoramic view. This adventure is in the Fruita area of the park. The hike is about 4.4 miles and gains just over 1,000 feet of elevation.

This hike begins at an unmarked trailhead next to the historic Fruita blacksmith shop. Begin hiking uphill on a dirt road. After 0.1 miles, take a right to continue on Fremont Overlook Trail. You will keep climbing as you gain about 260 feet of elevation in the next half mile. The trail flattens out a bit for the next mile. Here, you will be hiking amongst grasses and sagebrush.

After hiking another mile, the trail will start to get steep again.You will gain over 500 feet of elevation over the 0.6 miles of the trail. There is a large cairn that marks the end of the trail. When you have finally reached the Fremont Gorge Overlook, you are treated with sweeping views of the picturesque gorge carved by the Fremont River. The Fremont River is named after John Charles Fremont. Fremont was an American explorer who traveled much of the American West. 

From the overlook, there are also incredible views of the Waterpocket Fold and the Henry Mountains. After taking ample time to take in the beautiful sights, retrace your steps to return to the trailhead.

The Fremont Gorge Overlook Trail is open year-round and there are no associated fees with this area of Capitol Reef National Park. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. This trail has no shade and can get very hot, so be sure to bring plenty of water. The Fremont Gorge Overlook Trail can be a difficult endeavor at times, but the spectacular views at the end make it well worth the effort.
