The park road between the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park and Fishing Bridge Village is a beautiful drive that passes over Sylvan Pass through the Absaroka Mountains. A nice side trip when entering or leaving the park is the 1-mile road that climbs up to this overlook above Yellowstone Lake.

A favorite west-facing sunset spot, and for good reason, Lake Butte Overlook is one of the only easily reached spots in the park where a view of the Tetons can be seen. It is also a great place to take in the entirety of Yellowstone Lake. There are a few ruffed grouse that frequent the area around the overlook, and with luck visitors will see one with its amazing tail display and hear its unusual guttural call.
