The Commissary Ridge Yurt is commonly rated as one of the top 10 yurts in the United States. With abundant terrain and snowfall, this yurt has something for everyone. Overlooking the Western Tetons, this yurt is truly in a wild place. At night, wolves howl in the distance, and you may even be fortunate enough to ski across wolf tracks on the way up to Beard Mountain. Take note that snowmobiles are allowed in this area. While this means you can haul your gear in, it also means that it is possible to encounter other snowmobilers while out skiing. The Jedidiah Smith Wilderness is located on the eastern side of Commissary Ridge, and as a wilderness area it is off limits to snowmobilers.
The yurt looks out onto the Western Tetons, and on a clear day one can see the Grand Teton from the front steps of the yurt. Beard Mountain, the closest mountain, has a wide selection of terrain that is sure to please any backcountry skier. Commissary Ridge boasts a long section of skiable terrain off of the east shoulder. These lines are not particularly long, but they are fun, powdery, and easy to lap. A group could easily spend two full days dropping in this direction. The summit of Beard Mountain offers a riskier line that descends a large alpine bowl with a significant cliff band at the bottom. One could also ascend the twin summit of Beard Mountain and ski west, which is arguably the best line in the area. This run is about 1,500 feet of 30-degree trees that are fun for everyone.
The Commissary Ridge Yurt is an excellent way to experience the wilds of the Tetons in the winter, where cold temperatures and abundant snow await.
