Staircase Campground sits at the end of the only access road into this southeastern portion of Olympic National Park, and it is a small paradise at the end of the line. Located right on the banks of the North Fork of the Skokomish River, the campground is an ideal spot to spend a summer night or two as you float on the river, explore some of the nearby swimming holes on Lake Cushman, or venture out onto the miles of trails leading to Staircase Rapids, Flapjack Lakes, Wagonwheel Lake, up the river toward First Divide, or over west toward Six Ridge Pass. This section of the park really doesn't see the kind of traffic that shows up for more well-known sections, so time on the trails here can feel very unique.
Because of its setting on the river and the proximity to Lake Cushman, however, this campground does see some crowds in the summer season. All 56 sites here are first-come, first-served, so be sure to arrive early to ensure a good selection. Sites here are mostly generously sized and well distributed. All are quite shaded, which helps with the sun and can also be handy when campground noise picks up on the weekends. The Staircase Ranger Station is located here as well, which also helps. Staircase Campground has a standard array of amenities: each site has a picnic table and a fire ring, and the campground offers restrooms, potable water, and a day use area for river based activities. Note, however, that while the campground is open year round, the water and restroom facilities are only available in the summer. Contact the Staircase Ranger Station at 360.877.5569 for exact dates.
