Though it is often overlooked, lower Salmon Creek is an excellent half or full day voyage that offers plenty of bird watching opportunities.  We recommend making this a shuttled adventure if you have two cars; it is close to the city and the drop-off and pick-up spots are close to the road.  From the river you’ll notice the plethora of waterfowl and birds of prey including red-winged blackbirds, mallards, numerous great blue herons, bald eagles, osprey and a cluster of Embden geese near the Felida Moorage.  The trip is also perfect for kids because the distance is short, the scenery is never the same and the current is quite slow.  To make this a full day adventure, paddle up river from the Northwest 36th Avenue bridge as far as your heart desires, or continue the paddle down Lake River, past the Felida Moorage and to Vancouver Lake.
