Joseph Whidbey State Park Beach

The beach at Joseph Whidbey State Park stretches over half a mile, making it one of the longest on Whidbey Island. The park was named all the way back during the Vancouver Expedition of 1792, after Master Joseph Whidbey circumnavigated Whidbey Island. In 1942, the U.S. Navy founded a Naval Air Station adjacent to the park. A red flag will fly near the parking area when Naval training is expected to impact visitors to the park.

For day visitors, there are great views of the San Juan Islands to enjoy along with waves that periodically are suited to kite-surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, or even just swimming. Bird- and whale-watching are other popular activities. Crabbing and fishing are permitted with the proper licenses (visit the WA Department of Fish and Wildlife's website for more details). Stroll along the beach to discover some old washed-up artifacts. There are a number of first-come, first-served picnic tables, as well as one reservable picnic shelter with a grill. Joseph Whidbey State Park hosts one primitive, first-come, first-served marine campsite available only to those arriving by human-powered watercraft.
