The Dungeness Recreation Area is a 216-acre park and campground that also serves as the main entrance to the incredible Dungeness Spit and National Wildlife Refuge which is arguably best explored by kayak. Much of the park is open space through which various equestrian and hiking trails lead. The 1-mile bluff trail provides excellent views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and there is a hiking trail that leads directly to the spit from the campground.

The Dungeness Recreation Area Campground is comprised of two loops set at the northeast corner of the park, closest to the spit. Each loop has a centrally located restroom and coin-operated shower facility, and each has large sites that come with picnic tables and firepits. Sites in this campground are both spacious and well spaced. Site lengths are generally in the 35- to 40-foot range. Campsite selection may be driven more by a preference for sun: the tree growth is dense in this section of the park, and as is the forest understory, so finding a spot that gets sunshine can be a bit of a trick. The site amenities at this campground are more straightforward than some: of the 64 available campsites (two more are reserved for hosts), none have hookups, though there is a dump station near the park entrance. Sites 17 and 60 are ADA accessible.

While both the park and the campground are open year round, some sites close in the winter months. A new online reservation system has replaced the park's previous mail reservation system, and sites 36 through 66 are available for reservation, while the rest are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Note that the main gate is closed overnight, roughly from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m.
