Prospect Rock is a popular, family-friendly hike in the Lamoille Valley near Johnson, Vermont. The 2.6-mile round-trip trail climbs roughly 460 feet to a spectacular outcropping with views of the Lamoille River and the Sterling Range. The trail begins along the Long Trail, crossing a dramatic suspension bridge over the Lamoille River near Ithiel Falls.
From the trailhead on Route 15, follow the Long Trail north as it cuts through the forest. After a short descent, the trail winds through a marshy area near the Lamoille River to the long suspension bridge. The gentle currents along the river-left shores can be an inviting place to soak the feet.
After crossing the bridge, the trail continues across the Hog Back Road. Once in the woods, the trail climbs moderately. Wildflowers and tiny stream beds occasionally dot the trail. Be aware of poison ivy on the trail sides at lower elevation.
The trail reaches an abrupt headwall, switchbacking steeply up the hillside. It can be easy to lose the trail here, so keep your eyes peeled for trail markers along the way. When the trail levels off, the overlook is only a few hundred yards away.
As the trees thin, great views of the Lamoille River and the Sterling Range come into view. The mostly level bedrock outcropping makes a great place for picnics. There are no railings or safety features, so be sure to watch younger children carefully while at the summit.
