One of the popular short hikes in Canyonlands National Park, the trail to the overlooks on Upheaval Dome is fun and worthwhile. It is a bit harder than might be expected due to some slickrock sccrambling and a few steep, exposed spots, but that only adds to its appeal.
From the Upheaval Dome parking lot, the trail heads through a wash and up a small hill. The trail spilts almost immediately: the left and right branches lead to the 8-mile Syncline Loop Trail, and the straight-ahead path is the route to the overlooks. The first overlook is an easy climb and offers a great view of the dome, which really resembles a deep gray crater. The origins of the dome are still not clear; two competing theories include a meteor strike 200 million years ago and a salt dome that extruded from below.
From the first overlook the trail follows the rim of the crater for another half mile up and over a few large rock bluffs and finishes at a cliff overlooking another view of the dome. The views all along the route are magnificent and expansive, making this trail a great way to spend an hour or two.
