Stewart Falls Trail

Located near the base of the mighty Mount Timpanogos, Stewart Falls is the flagship landmark of the quaint and charming town of Sundance. While you can get a great view of the falls from town, you really should take the trail to get up close and personal with the multi-tiered cascade. Starting from the beginning of the Alpine Loop Scenic Drive, the trail does not have major elevation gains and is short enough for most skill levels, making it a popular hike for tourists as well as locals from the nearby town of Provo. Autumn is an excellent time of year to make this hike as the aspen, cottonwood, and maple trees transition into brilliant colors along with the lower brush. Additionally, the slight chill in the air keeps you cool along the way.

The trail begins to pick up most of its elevation gain in the first half a mile, but it quickly levels out as you approach the first grove of aspen. The trail has a decent amount of tree coverage, which is ideal on hot summer days, and you can even bring the pups along for the adventure. As you head toward the falls you get great views of the town of Sundance below as well as the Timpanogos cirques above. Sunset occurs up and over the hill, so sunrise or morning can be the prettiest and sunniest time to go.

Once you get close to the waterfall the trail begins to get a bit more technical and starts to descend, allowing you to get to the base of the falls with a few quick switchbacks. In autumn the water flow decreases steadily, which makes interacting with the area less dangerous. The 200-foot tall waterfall comes down as a stepped cascade with a large bowl near the bottom, creating a unique formation to impress any nature lover. The base of the falls is a great place to grab some lunch when the water is not flowing too hard.

The beauty and magic on this trail are undeniable, and it is an absolute must for anyone in the area. There are many hikes, sites and features in the vicinity, so don't stop just with this trail. Driving the Alpine Loop, exploring the town of Sundance, and hiking Mount Timpanogos are all worth your time should not be missed if you have the option.
