Pineview Beach is situated on the western side of the reservoir, just above the dam site, making it one of the most accessible beaches for those traveling from Salt Lake City and Ogden. It features a wide, sandy beach, and it is relatively primitive compared to Middle Inlet Beach and Cemetery Point. That comes with an added bonus, though—it’s free to use. Even so, brace for extremely high traffic on summer weekends, and arrive early if you’re hoping to snag a good spot.
Stamped into the river bed at the confluence of the north, south, and center forks of the Ogden River, the Pineview Dam has afforded year-round irrigation for farmers in the Ogden River Canyon since it was built under President Roosevelt’s authorization in 1934. Soon thereafter it became an epicenter for boating and recreation for Eden, Huntsville, and nearby Salt Lake City.
Pineview Reservoir is encircled by the Wasatch Mountains, providing an incredible backdrop, and all but eliminating wind from the water’s surface. This makes it a supremely popular destination for boaters, water skiers, wake boarders, SUP boarders, and the like. If you’re toting a motor boat or anything larger than a kayak, Cemetery Point or Middle Inlet Beach are the best bets for those needing a boat ramp. It’s an unusual sunny day, though, to visit Pineview Beach and not see a fleet of candy-colored water vessels.
If you’re planning to bring a kayak or canoe, pack your fishing gear! A surprisingly wide variety of fish inhabit the reservoir, making it an excellent location for sport fishing. The grand prize: trophy-sized tiger muskie—a hybrid fish combining a muskie with a pike. The record tiger muskie caught in the reservoir weighed in at a whopping 33 pounds and measured 49 inches, so you could find yourself in an adventurous situation if you hook one from a SUP board. The South Fork of the Ogden River, just above the dam, is a popular fly fishing destination with medium-sized trout biting nearly year round.
