Homestead Overlook is located along Highway 12 at an elevation of 9,400 feet. The high elevation means that the overlook road is snow covered during the winters, and only open to vehicles during the warmer months. The overlook provides spectacular views and is well worth the stop if you are passing through this area.

This stretch of Highway 12 over Boulder Mountain wasn’t paved until 1985. Prior to that the road would be closed from late November through late May, isolating the small community of Boulder from Torrey.

The views from the Homestead Overlook are truly spectacular. The Escalante River drainage and a labyrinth of canyons, mesas, and rolling slickrock stretch below you. Capitol Reef National Park is a main focal point below, and contrasts beautifully against the impressive Henry Mountains.

There are a couple picnic tables here at the overlook, as well as a vault toilet.
