Grand Parade Trail

One of several short hikes in Kodachrome Basin State Park, the Grand Parade Trail is a great way to explore the floor of the basin and several small box canyons without having to climb too much or walk too far. The trail is infrequently used and the rock formations create a secluded path, so the sense of solitude is quite strong.

The trail can start either at the signed parking area near the store or a quarter-mile up the park road toward the campground at a marked opening in the fence. Whichever starting point is used, the trail quickly winds deep into the red and white sandstone pillars and cliffs of the basin floor. There are several side trails that lead to dead-end canyons, and they are definitely worth exploring. The changing terrain and views around every corner are surprising and very photogenic. It is easy to lose track of time wandering among the rock formations.  

Note: Please stay on the trails as the cryptobiotic soil is fragile and takes years to recover. Also, the rocks are very soft and not appropriate or safe for climbing.
