Bobsled is a classic Salt Lake ride that provides a great all-mountain experience within minutes of downtown.
The ride begins at the 11th Avenue Park. From here there is a quick, if steep, pedal up the street to the Bonneville Shoreline Trailhead. It is possible to park at this trailhead, or to shuttle up to it, but the space is very limited. This broad trail will continue to climb for another mile or so. There are a few junctions in the trail, but you’ll simply continue straight ahead until you reach the Bobsled cutoff.
You’ll quickly learn how the trail got its name. As you shoot down the ravine, the trail sweeps dramatically from one bank to the next, swinging you through the scrub oak that surrounds the trail. Depending on the time of year, the weather, and the traffic on the trail, it may be a little rutted out through these steep sections.
One of the most notable aspects of this trail are the car features, including a drop and a few jumps built on the ruins of cars long since dumped into the ravine. These are followed by a few other features, including a high-penalty creek gap, but the default is to bypass these features. You’ll have to divert from the main trail if you want to hit them, but don’t worry about missing them. They are very conspicuous.
At the end of the trail there is a quick climb out of the ravine. You’ll then drop back onto the street, which will quickly lead you back to 11th Avenue Park.
