Utah's Tushar Mountains are an under-appreciated range that tower more than 12,000 feet over the southwestern part of the state. They offer numerous recreation opportunities including peak bagging, backpacking, mountain biking, and wildlife watching. With so many things to do, and because the area is rather remote, it makes sense to stay a few days if you are visiting the Tushars. Big Flat is a free base camp that is conveniently located near all that these impressive mountains have to offer. The spectacular Skyline Trail has its southern trailhead at Big Flat, and the summer trails at Eagle Point Ski Resort are just down the road.
Big Flat is a large plateau that shoulders the mountain range. The scenery is a broad, open meadow surrounded by conifer and aspen trees. Views include the 12,000-foot peaks of Mount Baldy, Mount Belknap, and the highest in the range, Delano Peak. Herds of mule deer graze at dawn and dusk, and birds of prey commonly soar overhead.
This is dispersed camping in Fishlake National Forest. You can pitch a tent or park an RV in any cleared area around the meadow or forest edge. Groups of all sizes can be accommodated in the larger clearings, but there are also secluded spots. Just drive around until you find the location that is right for you. There are pit toilets at certain locations, but no water, hookups, or other amenities. Fires are allowed unless seasonal restrictions are posted.
Big Flat is transected by UT-153, which is accessible from either the west or east side of the mountains. The west side, which comes from I-70, is paved for most of the way and is suitable for large RVs, even after it turns to gravel. The east end, which comes from US-89, is rougher but still passable for most vehicles if conditions are dry.
There are also maintained Forest Service campgrounds along UT-153 west of Eagle Point. These require a fee but have more amenities and are closer to I-70. See the Beaver Ranger District webpage for more information.
