The Slope Point Walk is a short and easy hike located in Southland. This trail brings you to sea cliffs at the southernmost point of New Zealand’s South Island. The trail is grass the whole way. This hike is 1 mile long and gains 78 feet of elevation.

This hike starts from Slope Point Car Park off of Slope Pt Rd. There are no amenities at the trailhead. Pass through a gate and begin hiking southeast. You will be hiking through active pasture. Be aware of farm animals and their droppings. After 0.2 miles of hiking, the trail turns to the left. You now should have some views of the South Pacific Ocean. Continue on the flat trail towards the point. You will pass by some windswept trees, as this area is notoriously windy. Another 0.3 miles will bring you to Slope Point.

From Slope Point, you will enjoy magnificent views of the ocean waves crashing against rocky sea cliffs. There is also a sign marking Slope Point as the southernmost point of the South Island of New Zealand. This point is 5140 km from the equator and 4803 km from the South Pole. The sign also notes the exact latitude and longitude of this point. Once you have had enough of the strong winds, turn around and retrace your steps to return to the car park.

The Slope Point Walk is open for hiking year round. There are no associated fees to hike here. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. The Slope Point Walk is a wonderful adventure for hikers of all abilities visiting Southland.
