The ruins of Plantage Fontein create a picturesque and easily accessible example of a former ranch property now under the control of Aruba's Arikok National Park.
Despite being quickly accessible from the same parking lot as the park's popular Fontein Cave, Fontein Plantage conversely sees relatively few visitors. The old homestead sits in an area that was fed by a large natural spring. That spring is still visible right behind the house - cooling ones feet in the outflow of the stone spring reservoir while small fish nip at your toes is a popular activity.
The home itself has picturesque walkways and arches fronting the building while several other outbuildings lie in front of the house. Fruit trees dot areas of the yard, and the remains of a stone pool lie behind the house - a testament to the oasis-like nature of the area surrounding the springs in the midst of an otherwise arid landscape.
While the park asks visitors to stay outside of any structures, it is possible to catch glimpses of the colorful tile the once lined the floors of the interior rooms.
Fontein Plantage is accessible from a dirt parking area in front of the house along Rte 7, the main paved road along the coastal portion of Arikok National Park. There is also a short paved path containing several steps that reaches the homestead from the Fontein Cave parking area.
Vault bathrooms, drinking water and park rangers ready to answer questions are all available in the Fontein Cave parking area.
Plantage Fontein is subject to all Arikok National Park rules including park entry fees and visiting hours.
